If the RV water pump runs but faucets stay dry, the pump itself is only one possibility. Empty tanks, valve positions, winterization plumbing, clogged strainers and air leaks on the suction side are common things to eliminate first.
Do not replace the pump until it has a confirmed water supply and a sealed inlet path.
Quick diagnostic path
Pump runs + no water ↓ Fresh tank actually contains water? ↓ Tank / winterization / bypass valves correct? ↓ Pump inlet strainer clear and sealed? ↓ Can pump prime with faucet open? ↓ Check suction hose for air leak/kink/blockage ↓ Water reaches pump inlet but no outlet pressure → pump/check-valve diagnosis
Step-by-step checks
- Verify the freshwater tank level directly if possible. Tank gauges can be inaccurate. Confirm you are not accidentally relying on a false reading.
- Check valve positions. After winterization, a siphon/antifreeze valve may still be selected, or a tank valve may be closed. Valve layouts vary by RV, so use your plumbing diagram if available.
- Open one cold-water faucet. Allow a short priming attempt while listening to the pump. Do not let a pump run dry for an extended period.
- Inspect the inlet strainer. A clogged screen can starve the pump. A loose strainer bowl, damaged O-ring or poorly sealed fitting can let air enter without leaking water externally.
- Inspect the suction line from tank to pump. Look for kinks, collapsed hose, loose clamps, cracked fittings or a winterization tee pulling air.
- Check the tank vent/fill arrangement. A severely restricted vent or plumbing obstruction can affect delivery.
- Determine whether water reaches the pump inlet. If the inlet has a dependable water supply but the pump cannot prime or develop pressure, then internal pump/check-valve problems become more likely.
If the pump cycles but still produces some water
Weak or pulsing flow can point toward inlet restriction, an air leak, clogged aerators, a partially closed valve, low voltage at the pump under load or a pressure-side leak. Test more than one faucet so a single clogged aerator does not send you toward the pump unnecessarily.
Repair or replace?
Clean or reseal the strainer, correct valve positions and repair suction leaks before considering replacement. If proper voltage and unrestricted water reach the pump yet it cannot prime or build pressure according to its manual, replacement or pump-specific service may be justified.
FAQ
Why does the pump sound normal but move no water?
A diaphragm pump can run while drawing air instead of water. Suction-side air leaks often do not show an external water leak.
Can winterization cause this in spring?
Yes. An antifreeze pickup valve, bypass arrangement or disconnected line can leave the pump drawing from the wrong source.
Should I pour water into the pump?
Use only the priming procedure specified for your exact pump. Do not improvise a procedure that could contaminate the potable-water system or damage the pump.
