Hard campground water can leave mineral deposits on fixtures, shower surfaces and plumbing components. A portable RV water softener is intended to reduce hardness minerals before the water enters the RV.
Water filter vs. water softener
A filter and a softener do different jobs. Filters commonly target sediment, taste or odor. Ion-exchange softeners target calcium and magnesium hardness. Some RV setups use both.
Signs hard water may be a problem
- White mineral residue around faucets or shower heads
- Spotting on fixtures
- Reduced soap lather
- Repeated scale buildup in water-using equipment
Using a portable RV softener
Install and operate the unit according to its manufacturer’s flow-direction and pressure instructions. Portable ion-exchange softeners require periodic regeneration, typically using salt, and the interval depends heavily on water hardness and water consumption.
Test rather than guess
Water hardness varies dramatically between campgrounds and regions. A hardness test can help determine whether softening is worthwhile and how frequently regeneration may be required.
