Why RV Jacks Sink on Soft Ground—and How Jack Blocks Help

RV leveling jack blocks supporting a stabilizer on a campsite

An RV may feel solid when you first set up, then lean or rock hours later. One common cause is a jack, stabilizer, or tongue jack pressing into soft ground. A wider, load-rated block can spread that force across more surface area, but it must be used correctly and within the equipment’s limits.

Why RV jacks sink or settle

  • Wet or loose soil: Concentrated loads displace soft ground.
  • Gravel: Stones can shift under a small jack foot.
  • Hot asphalt: Heavy point loads may leave impressions.
  • Freeze-thaw or rain: Ground conditions can change after setup.
  • Small contact area: A narrow foot concentrates force more than a larger pad or block.

What a jack block actually does

A properly sized block increases the contact area between the support and the ground. This can reduce sinking and may shorten stabilizer extension, which often helps rigidity. A block does not increase the jack’s rated capacity, make unsuitable ground safe, or turn a stabilizer into a lifting jack.

Leveling blocks versus stabilizer blocks

Drive-on leveling products raise tires to correct side-to-side height. Jack or stabilizer blocks support tongue jacks, landing gear, or stabilizer feet. Some products may be approved for multiple uses, but never assume interchangeability—follow their labeling and your RV manufacturer’s setup procedure.

How to use RV jack blocks safely

  1. Choose the firmest, flattest available site.
  2. Chock wheels before unhitching or operating jacks.
  3. Inspect blocks for cracks, deformation, or contamination.
  4. Place each block flat and centered beneath the approved contact point.
  5. Keep stacks within the manufacturer’s allowed configuration.
  6. Recheck every contact point after walking through the RV and after changing weather.

If the RV is level but still moves

Sinking is only one source of movement. Wheel motion, long stabilizer extensions, loose contact points, steps, slides, and frame flex can contribute. Follow our guide to an RV that is level but still rocks.
